Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 June 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Climbing Conditions
(the “App”) and this website (the “Site”) handle
information. The App is distributed on Google Play under the package name
com.climbingapp.climbing_app.
By using the App, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
Summary
- No user accounts, sign-in, or profiles.
- No advertising SDKs or in-app analytics in the current release.
- No sale of personal data.
- Optional device location is used only on your device to center the map on you.
- When you browse the map, the App sends a map viewport (bounding box and zoom level) to our servers to load nearby crags.
- Crag and weather data are cached locally on your device for faster loading and limited offline use.
Who operates the App
The App is operated by the developer listed on the Google Play store listing. For privacy questions, contact: climb3to9@gmail.com.
Information the App collects and uses
1. Optional device location
If you tap the control to center the map on your position, the App requests foreground location permission and reads your device’s GPS coordinates. This is used only on your device to move the map camera. We do not send your precise GPS coordinates to our servers as a dedicated “user location” field.
You can deny location permission and still use the App by panning the map manually. Location is not collected in the background.
2. Map viewport (approximate area of interest)
When you move or zoom the map, the App requests crag data from our backend API by sending:
- Minimum and maximum latitude and longitude of the visible map area
- Map zoom level
This can reveal the general geographic region you are viewing. It is necessary to show relevant crags and clusters. If you use “center on me,” the subsequent data request may correspond to the area around your position.
3. Crag detail requests
When you open a crag, the App requests that crag’s identifier from our API. This does not include personal information.
4. Local storage on your device
The App stores a local cache (SQLite database) on your device, including:
- Crag names, locations, and metadata returned from our API
- Condition scores and weather-related data for viewed areas
- Timestamps used to expire stale cache entries
This cache is not synced to a user account. It remains on your device until you clear app data or uninstall the App.
Information we do not collect
In the current release, the App does not collect:
- Name, email address, phone number, or other contact details
- Payment or financial information
- Contacts, photos, or files from your device
- Advertising identifiers for targeted ads
- Analytics or crash-reporting data via third-party SDKs
Third-party services
| Service | Role | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Our backend API (Amazon Web Services) | Hosts crag catalog, scores, and weather resolution | Map viewport parameters, crag IDs, standard request metadata (e.g. IP address, timestamps in server logs) |
| CARTO | Map basemap tiles loaded by the App | Tile coordinates and your IP address as part of normal HTTP requests to CARTO’s CDN |
| Open-Meteo | Weather data used by our backend to compute scores | The App does not call Open-Meteo directly. Our servers request weather for geographic cells that cover crags you may view. |
| OpenStreetMap | Source for much of the crag catalog (via our backend) | Public geographic and climbing-related tags; no personal data |
| Google Play | App distribution and updates | Governed by Google’s Privacy Policy |
We do not control third-party privacy practices. We encourage you to review their policies.
How we use information
- Display crags, scores, and weather on the map and in lists
- Cache data locally to improve performance and reduce network use
- Operate, secure, and troubleshoot the backend service
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not use your information for targeted advertising in the current release.
Legal bases (EEA / UK users)
Where applicable, we rely on:
- Legitimate interests to operate the App, serve map data, and maintain security
- Consent for optional device location (via the system permission prompt)
Data retention
- On your device: Cached data is kept until it expires (typically hours to days, depending on data type) or until you clear app storage or uninstall.
- On our servers: API request logs may be retained for a limited period for security and operations, then deleted or aggregated. We do not maintain user profiles.
Your choices and rights
- Location: Deny or revoke permission in Android settings. The App works without it.
- Local data: Clear storage for Climbing Conditions in Android settings, or uninstall the App.
- Access / deletion / objection: Because we do not operate user accounts, we generally do not hold identifiable personal data beyond short-lived server logs. You may contact us at climb3to9@gmail.com with requests applicable in your region.
Children’s privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
Communication between the App and our API uses HTTPS. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we use reasonable measures appropriate to the data we process.
International transfers
Our backend may process data in the European Union (e.g. AWS
eu-west-1). Third-party providers may process data in other
countries under their own terms.
Future changes to the App
The App is currently free and does not show ads or offer in-app purchases. We may introduce advertising, subscriptions, or other paid features in the future. If we do, we will update this policy and, where required, the Google Play Data safety section before those features go live.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
